Check your Internet Explorer settings - I have had that several times and every time it has been a security setting in IE. Sometimes it requires resetting IE to default settings.

I ran into the same problem over the past couple days with Windows 7 RC and finally dug into it some more.


1. End Task on EXPLORER.EXE from Task Manager.

2. Start the Registry Editor

3. Look for the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

4. Rename the key so it looks like the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}.BACKUP

5. From Task Manager click on File | New Task (Run) and type EXPLORER.EXE and hit return.

6. Now try your search from the Start Menu again.

If the above process doesn't work for you, you can always put it back the way it was by reversing the process above.

I don't understand exactly what this key is controlling, but hopefully someone else can shed some light on why this works.

Weird, I haven't seen this problem before. The first couple comments are irrelevant because this has nothing to do with IE, but it looks like Matthew Evans is onto something. The other question, even if that does work, is how did it get messed up in the first place?

It seems that the root of the problem is the GroupBy value in the key mentioned above. It is set to System.Null, when it should be System.StartMenu.Group. When it is set to System.Null, all that you end up seeing in the list is the set of categories that items were found in, not the actual items found in the search.

I don't know what changed that value for me (or how I did it inadvertently), but setting the value back to System.StartMenu.Group does seem to correct the issue.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
